How I Conquered the Watcher at the Edge in Silksong
I've been completely hooked on Hollow Knight: Silksong since it dropped in 2025, and after pouring more hours than I'd care to admit into this gem, the endgame secrets still manage to blow my mind. Among the coolest rewards are the Mementos — special trophies you earn by tackling hidden bosses and mini-games. One of the most elusive is the Grey Memento, and bagging it means going toe-to-toe with the Watcher at the Edge. This fight is no walk in the park, but with the right prep and a solid strategy, you'll have that Memento sitting pretty in Bellhome. Let me walk you through exactly where to find this sneaky boss and how to send it packing.
First things first — you can't even think about challenging the Watcher until you're deep into the game. You'll need to have unlocked the Sands of Karak region and snagged the Silk Soar ability, which you pick up in Act 3's Abyss. Once you've got that beautiful aerial upgrade, head back to the main corridor hugging the southwest part of the Sands. Now comes the tricky bit: there's a hidden route that relies on activating the right seeds.
I stumbled around here for ages before it clicked. You've got to locate the first seed, which sends out branches to the east and west. Take the western branch and follow it until you spot a second seed tucked away in the cavern ceiling — it's easy to miss if you're not scanning upward. Give that second seed a whack, and it sprouts a path to a hidden chamber. From there, stand on the tiny platform on the left and use Silk Soar to launch yourself up to the next area. Keep pushing west through the howling sandstorm until you see what looks like a weathered statue. That's your target: the Watcher at the Edge.
To wake this sleeping giant, you'll need to play the Needolin right in front of it. Trust me, the moment the music hits, the fight is on — there's no turning back. The sand whips around, the atmosphere turns electric, and you realise you're in for a real scrap.
After a bunch of attempts (and more than a few rage-inducing deaths), I settled on a loadout that absolutely delivers. Here's what worked for me:
-
Crest: Wanderer Crest — basically the old-school Nail, super quick and let me stay aggressive.
-
Red Tool: Tacks — the Watcher loves to lunge across the ground, so planting these turned the tide.
-
Yellow Tools: Magnetite Dice — extra chip damage never hurts.
-
Blue Tools: Injector Band (for safe healing during the chaos), Longclaw (to compensate for the shorter blade), and Druid's Eyes (so even my mistakes generated silk).
I wouldn't dream of going into this fight with anything less than a Needle upgraded three times. Seriously, don't punish yourself — a weak weapon makes the fight twice as long and twice as painful. Also make sure you've got at least 8 Masks. With Silk Soar in your arsenal, you can easily track down all 20 Mask Shards scattered across the game, so there's really no excuse.
The Watcher may not have multiple phases, but don't let that fool you — it hits like a freight train. The move set is consistent, so learning the patterns is half the battle. Here's what you're up against:
-
Lunging Slash: The boss dashes across the screen with its weapon. Jump and pogo off its head to avoid damage and deal some of your own.
-
Defensive Stance into Leaping Attack: It'll hunker down for a moment, then leap into the air and crash down. Dash away and be ready to counter.
-
Sand Dive: The Watcher dives into the ground and bursts out elsewhere. Keep moving and use Tacks to hit it as it surfaces.
-
Wide Sweeps: When at close range, it unleashes horizontal slashes. Stick to quick hits and bail out.
I found the rhythm pretty quickly: stay mobile, punish the lunges with Tacks, and never get greedy. The Injector Band let me heal when I mistimed a dodge, and Druid's Eyes meant I was always gathering silk even while taking hits — a real lifesaver.
Once you finally topple the Watcher, the Grey Memento is automatically yours. You'll feel a massive rush of relief, I promise. This little trinket is one of eight Mementos you can display at Bellhome, and it's a badge of honour among Silksong players. The whole experience exemplifies what I adore about this game: hidden corners, relentless challenges, and rewards that make all the swearing worthwhile. So go get 'em, and don't let the sandstorm put you off — victory is just a few well-timed dodges away.
